About Us

Common Outlook Consulting centers its approach to negotiation strategy and conflict management on the Harvard Negotiation Project's groundbreaking interest-based or joint problem-solving model, and has built upon and refined these ideas through years of experience with leading global companies around the world.

What sets us apart from the rest?

The following four key factors distinguish Common Outlook from the rest of the pack:

  • We don’t just talk about the ideas –- we use them. We provide advice on real, current issues your organization is facing. We also make every effort to "walk the talk" –- that is, we live by the advice we give our clients. The point may seem obvious, but this is often easier said than done.
  • We maintain a relentless focus on explaining how our ideas can be used in your context. We do this by learning about your business before the work begins, and then using specific examples, role-plays, and case studies to draw the link. As a result, our clients are able to apply the tools and concepts immediately upon their return to work.
  • We help your people implement our tools to obtain sustainable changed behavior. We do this by using a number of follow-up and reinforcement mechanisms to keep the concepts and practice top-of-mind. While we are thrilled that our clients consistently rank our workshops as among the very best they have ever participated in, even the most powerful ideas in the world are of little value to your organization unless they are implemented and produce changed behavior.
  • Our approach is born out of a solid theoretical framework developed at the Harvard Negotiation Project. Over time, this has been reinforced through years of real-world research and additions to the theoretical backbone. This has been further refined through extensive practice with corporate and governmental clients around the world.

Our approach is multi-faceted. We begin by interviewing key members of your organization to help us understand your specific needs and objectives. From this, the design of our engagement is derived. Virtually everything we do is customized to your context. We may recommend a combination of training, consulting, coaching, facilitation, or mediation services, which are addressed in more detail in our services section.

A crucial final step is follow-up, to ensure the desired results were obtained. One-time interventions seldom produce the results an organization desires, yet this is all too often the practice among consulting and training firms.

Continuous Learning and Improvement

Our commitment is to continually improve our theory and practice based on what we learn through experience. This benefits you by keeping you on the leading edge, and it benefits us by providing ongoing personal and professional growth.
